Our column heading, “From the lake to the Bay™” is especially appropriate as we explore golfing in Door County.

That’s because the Peninsula offers courses on its Green Bay waters as well as the Lake Michigan side. Some courses suit beginners, and others are designed for championship golfers. Some are flat, some are hilly, some have nine holes---including one on Washington Island.

So let’s take a brief tour of the greens.

map-of-golf-courseAlpine Golf Course, Egg Harbor, offers breathtaking views of the bay as well as the bluffs. This is Door County’s only 36-hole public course, offering golfers a choice in level of difficulty. There are two flat nine-hole courses along Bay Shore Drive--the white and red--while the blue and black courses take you up and down bluffs as you play through. Try to include the Blue on your outing, because the 9th hole on the Blue offers a wonderful vista of the waters as you shoot down to the green – awesome!

Still in Egg Harbor is the Orchards, renowned for its sparkling condition and championship tees. It is ranked as one of the most challenging courses in northeast Wisconsin, too. The course plays from 5,500 to more than 7,000 yards through woods, orchards and scenic meadows.

Also in Egg Harbor is Horseshoe Bay Golf Club, recently ranked the number four private golf club in Wisconsin. It affords golfers lovely views of Green Bay waters and spectacular surrounding homes.

Stonehedge Golf Course and Driving Range, Egg Harbor, is a great place to come with the family. It has nine holes and sits on 40 acres adorned with mature trees and surrounded by cherry orchards. John Henry’s bar and restaurant are on the grounds too – great place.

view-of-golf-coursePeninsula State Park Golf Course, Ephraim, is actually located within Door County’s largest state park. Golfers have outstanding views of Eagle Harbor along a challenging irrigated 18-hole layout. The terrain is so hilly that on one hole golfers must ring a bell before the next golf group can tee off.

Door County is also home to another nine-hole course, Bay Ridge Golf Course, Sister Bay. Included are watered fairways, challenging greens and lovely gardens.

On Door County’s lakeside is Maxwelton Braes, Baileys Harbor. This 18-hole course is relatively flat and easy for golfers to walk. It is always noted for its excellent greens.

On Washington Island is Deer Run Golf Course. The course is marketed as a challenging nine-hole regulation course with demanding greens and elevated tee boxes.

In Sturgeon Bay, golfers can discover Cherry Hills Golf Course, an 18-hole championship course. And Idlewild Golf Course in Sturgeon Bay was recently rated four-star as one of Golf Digest’s “Places to Play.”

So, when you head to Door County, don’t just bring the bikes and the boat. Bring the clubs, too. And go golfing. See all of our golf listings on’s golf pages. And please, tell the courses that we sent you!
