BIRCH CREEK SUMMER CONCERT SERIES – EGG HARBOR
Dates of Events: 6/19/16 – 8/13/16
Birch Creek is a nationally renowned summer music school by day and a celebrated concert venue at night. Top national and international artists are featured in more than 35 indoor evening concerts on Birch Creek’s rural campus. Music ranging from symphony to Big Band to percussion and steel band (excellent!) during selected evenings, 8 PM on the Birch Creek campus - beautiful. Tickets: Adults $29 / Young Adults $10 / Children $6. Only 3 miles east of Egg Harbor on County E. Call 920-868-3763 for specific details.
This is a must - one of the best bargains in Door County! You must check out their schedule, but the place itself is spectacular! The concerts take place in an old barn on what used to be a farm – it is as rustic as it gets, but the acoustics are fine, the experience awesome! After you park your car in the large parking field, you walk over and see the gazebo outside the barn – and some of the musicians are warming up and jamming prior to the actual concert – this alone is worth it! The musicians are students from all over (mostly from the Midwest) who are learning and honing their skills with music teachers who spend the summer at Birch Creek and teach (some come from as far away as upstate New York). Students live there on the grounds for about 2 weeks at a time, and then new students come in. It is truly a wonderful learning experience for the students, and they put on wonderful concerts for us all! At intermission, you can stroll the grounds, buy some popcorn, coffee of pop, a Birch Creek tee shirt or sweat, and stroll through the barn too – back around the left side where the practice rooms are, and where students are busy refining their craft!

SPEAKER SERIES AT MARITIME MUSUEM - STURGEON BAY
Dates of Events: Nov 5 2015 - March 3 2016
FITZGERALD PROGRAM TO KICK OFF SPEAKER SERIES NOVEMBER 5
Mark your calendars, the Door County Maritime Museum’s popular Maritime Speaker Series returns with five monthly programs beginning Thursday, Nov. 5, and continuing until March 3, 2016.This year’s series begins a month earlier than in previous years with a program being held in conjunction with the museum’s current 40th anniversary tribute exhibit dedicated to the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Author Rochelle Pennington returns to the museum on Thursday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. to address the most famous of all Great Lakes shipwrecks. It’s an event that gained worldwide fame both because of singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot’s hit song as well as the mystery that continues to this day concerning the cause on its sinking.
Pennington, who gained popularity for books on topics such as the Rouse Simmons (Christmas Tree Ship), will delve into the various theories and opposing views relating to the big ore carrier’s demise on Nov. 10, 1975 in which all 29 crew members tragically perished, including two men with strong ties to Sturgeon Bay.
Pennington has been researching the Fitzgerald’s sinking for a new book scheduled to be released next spring.
Four additional programs will follow beginning on Tuesday, Dec. 1. This is a departure from the normally first Thursday of the month scheduling to avoid the Green Bay Packers game at Detroit on Thursday night.
The Tuesday, Dec. 1, program features the Door County Maritime Museum’s former Executive Director, Bob Desh, who will present a program on World War II K-9 beach patrols, a more in-depth look inside the current Sea Dogs exhibit at the museum which Desh helped compile.
Resuming the first Thursday night scheduling in 2016, Terry Connelly will offer an in-depth look at the development and workings of The Weather Channel on Jan. 7. Connelly, who was senior vice president and general manager of the ground-breaking television network, will discuss such monumental challenges as the network’s coverage of Hurricane Katrina.
On Thursday, Feb. 4, the Door County Land Trust will present a program on the islands of Door County and specifically some of the work the conservation organization has been doing on some of them.
The series wraps up on Thursday, March 3, when author Joan Forsberg will delve into one of the great mysteries of the Great Lakes with a talk related to her new book “The Wreck of the Griffon,” Robert LaSalle’s 17-century sailing ship that disappeared during a voyage to Green Bay.
All of the evening programs are free of charge with a non-perishable food donation requested. They begin at 7 p.m. at the Sturgeon Bay museum. Call (920) 743-5958 or visit www.dcmm.org for moreinformation.

PUMPKIN PATCH FESTIVAL – EGG HARBOR
Dates of Event: 10/10/15 – 10/11/15
Pumpkin Patch is loaded with fun filled festivities in Egg Harbor - and you can take in the beauty and the pumpkin and scarecrow displays throughout the village. Harbor View Park is the place for family fun and outdoor entertainment. Chili, sweet corn, pumpkin pie, cider, beer and the best brats you have ever tasted! All day music, usually face painting, and more. Silent auction on Saturday. Call 920-868-3717 or www.eggharbordoorcounty.org
Highly Recommended! One of the staff’s favorite festivals, the Pumpkin Patch Festival in Egg Harbor is a delight – somehow they always get nice weather . . . mostly! Walk around Harbor View Park, smell the brats grilling, the corn roasting, hear the music playing, wafting up the hills from down near the harbor! And the entire town is decorated with corn stalks, pumpkins, hay and beautiful wreaths – and many of the businesses participate in the best decorated business contest – so you will see some clever decorations. Oh - try some of the chili – there is always a great cup of chili bubbling up near the park! Buy an official Pumpkin Patch cap or shirt, and whatever you do, stop in the Shipwrecked for a pumpkin beer that they brew only in the fall, right at Shipwrecked!
Be warned – it gets a little more crowded each year, but it is no where near as crowded as next week’s Sister Bay Fall festival. You will have to park pretty far away and walk – but that’s ok, that’s what it’s all about. If you remember (print this out!), park up on the hill road behind Main Street Market – you might be able to find a spot up there! Well, you have about another week before things really slow down in Door County – if you want Fall and very quiet – wait until after the Sister Bay Fall fest (but call inns to see who is open)!

Date of Event: 2/5/16
On Friday, February 5 at 7 p.m., DCA, in conjunction with Fish Creek Winter Games, will sponsor a screening of the Tony Shalhoub film Feed the Fish, which has been a favorite of Door County audiences ever since it was filmed on the peninsula in 2009. Set in Door County, Feed the Fish tells the story of Joe, a frustrated children’s-book writer in Los Angeles. To break through his writer’s block, Joe agrees to accompany his brother to Jacksonport, Wisconsin, to participate in the Polar Bear Plunge. The house where the brothers stay is isolated, and when Joe’s pal is hospitalized with a badger bite, Joe befriends a local hermit, develops a crush on the man’s granddaughter, and must deal with the local sheriff’s dislike of anyone from out of town. As Christmas approaches, things get even more complicated. Feed the Fish stars Green Bay native Tony Shalhoub (Monk), is directed by Michael Matzdorff, and features appearances by many familiar Door County faces. The film screening is free to the public and is sponsored by Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant and Butik. Freewill donations are encouraged.
