  • From February 19, 2017 10:00 until February 19, 2017 16:00
At 120 N. Madison Ave, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235 Categories: Family-Friendly
The Door County Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay will be offering free admission to children 12 and under with an accompanying paid adult beginning Sunday, January 29, and continuing on Sundays through the end of March. “This special offer hopefully encourages families the opportunity to see what the museum has to offer at a quieter time of the year,” said the museum’s Executive Director Amy Paul. “It’s a chance for parents to introduce the area’s rich maritime history to their children.” Among the highlights is the newly upgraded Elba pilothouse. Visitors can climb aboard this relic from a vintage 420-foot steam freighter. It’s windows are now filled with video screens that allow aspiring captains to pilot the freighter through the Sturgeon Bay Canal and all three of the city’s bridges by means of a realistic computer-driven interactive. The Elba is located inside the family-friendly “Sea Dogs” exhibit. Humans and dogs have enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship for tens of thousands of years. The exhibit chronicles some of the amazing “tails” and the enduring human-canine relationship. Families will have the opportunity to explore four galleries, including the Peterson Gallery and its remarkable view of Sturgeon Bay through a nuclear submarine periscope. There’s also the captivating story of Sturgeon Bay’s contributions to the World War II shipbuilding effort and the very first shipping container developed by shipyard owner Leathem Smith. Enjoy the museum’s extensive large-scale model collection centered in the Baumgartner Gallery and the lighthouse exhibit where the stunning Fresnel lens from the Sherwood Point Lighthouse is on display. For life-size boats and engines, check out the John Roen Asher Gallery. Also, hear the exploits of Capt. John Roen and see the first Marine Travelift boat hoist patented by George Baudhuin. Also visit the museum’s newest exhibit “Telegraphs of the Past”. This temporary exhibit centers on communication aboard a ship by way of a four-stage presentation. It is the second in a series of exhibits in the upper lobby designed to give the public a “hands-on” look at the museum’s collection of artifacts. There is no charge to check out the museum store for spring merchandise and take advantage of a selection of clearance-priced art prints, toys and t-shirts. The store library features a wide variety of maritime titles for adults and children. Enjoy 10% off all books from February 1 - March 31. The last few copies of 2016 issue of “Know Your Ships” will be marked down 20%. Museum admission is $10 for adults. Call the museum at (920)743-5958 or visit www.dcmm.org for more information.
