This cozy retreat, tucked away on 300 feet of water frontage on historic Sturgeon Bay, has a whole lot to offer from an inn, to cottages, a marina, and even boat rentals. This is a great retreat for anyone, and also serves well as a romantic escape. There are all kinds of accommodations, so you will find something that is just right for you. Read on!

We spent a couple of hours touring Snug Harbor, with Patti Hanson, one of your hosts when you stay with them. The main motel building was built by Virgil Starr (who was called "Birdie") in 1962. The second floor (suites) was added in 1994 and the existing motel was also remodeled around that time. The 4 cottages on the water were built in the 1930's to 1940's, but of course have all been updated.

Cottages 2 and 3 are cozy retreats with a great water view, a fireplace, and a small living room with a couch facing the fireplace and the water, a lounge chair and a dining table with chairs. Their two bedrooms each have a full bed. Each of these cottages has a bathroom as well.

Cottage 4, a "Snug Harbor Luxury Cottage," sports green carpeting, a living room with a fireplace and TV/VCR above it, full bath, and a kitchen area with stove, microwave, and a nice baker's rack. The double bed has a wrought iron four-poster frame, with nightstands on either side; and off to the left a double whirlpool! There is also a full private bath, with stand up shower. You get a very nice view of the water, and the dock from this luxury cottage.

Cottage 1A is called 1A because there is an option to adjoin it to Cottage 1 to make a two bedroom unit. Cottage 1A has a fleur-de-lis-style wallpaper, tray ceiling (think of a serving tray turned upside down) which adds volume to the room, and additional nice touches. The white wood country head boards on the 2 double beds, and nautical theme wall paper, and blue accents to the bedroom add charm. Of course the unit has a fireplace and TV, tables, chairs and full bath.

Onto to Cottage 1! This two-bedroom unit has a complete kitchen, with dishwasher, and a fireplace, TV, VCR and more. The living room area has a blue full-size sleeper sofa, a wooden and plaid-fabric chair, table and white painted chairs. Bedroom 1 sports a nautical theme in its sailor-knot wallpaper, and a double bed in this room which is approximately 9 feet by 8 feet. Bedroom 2, the master bedroom, has a vaulted ceiling, a TV in one corner, and a double whirlpool in the other, surrounded by tile and nautical rope trimboards. A queen bed and large closet complete this master bedroom! Looks good!

The fact that you can combine 1A and 1 offers some key options when traveling with a family, or with a group of friends. Very nice. And between the cabins, all in a row and the water are picnic tables, a swing, benches on the lawn, and grills for cooking out! You can even fish off the docks in you want (no swimming though)! And there's a fire pit for bonfires - what more can you ask?

Next we toured some of the other options available, from basic sleeping rooms to suites. Snug Harbor offers lots of options!

The basic room (here Room # 6), called a "sleeping room," is a nice, clean which faces the road, so there is no water view. A colorful green and burgundy quilt livens up the queen bed. A fridge is handy, and so is the cable TV. Bathroom as well. This is a nice, basic room - but, it can also adjoin one of the deluxe rooms (# 8), again, offering more options for family and friends. Room # 7 is the same type room, but is directly behind Room #6, so faces Sturgeon Bay and the water. This room can also adjoin to deluxe Room # 8. Rooms #11 (which is similar to #6 on the road side), and #10 (similar to # 7 on the water side) are also available.

We took a look at Room # 9 (which is basically the same as #8). Two full beds with wood bed frames, and sage walls with floral wallpaper border along the ceiling line. A kitchen, table and chairs (oak), and a TV, dresser and other accents finish the room. A definite water view, and access to the water side as well. This is a very nice deluxe room indeed!

And there's more! Off to the suites!

The Suites

We toured Suites 201, 202 and 203. These suites are all excellent, and all have queen beds! In 201, we were greeted with a blue floral carpet, a kitchen, table and chairs, and a small fridge for snacks and drinks. A full bed with wrought iron 4 - poster with lace, a two-person whirlpool, fireplace, TV and a balcony that overlooks the water add some excellent touches to this great suite. And then there's the wooden, spiral staircase leading up to another bedroom! Here, blue faux-style wallpaper graces the room where a full bed, chair, table and doorway to still another balcony with the same awesome view as the one below really make this special.

Suite 202 has beautiful yellow-tone rag-rolled walls, giving them a wonderful faux finish. An antique dining table with lace table cloth, floral sleeper couch, fireplace, TV, and balcony overlooking the water again makes this spectacular! In the bedroom, the other side of the 2-way fireplace warms one wall, while a whirlpool welcomes you, and a 4-poster bed, deep burgundy walls, access to the balcony, and direct access to the bathroom from the bedroom make this a wonderful suite. The loft here offers a leather couch, a wooden chair ceiling fan, 2 large windows, and a door to the covered balcony - again, with an awesome view of the Sturgeon Bay waters and shipping canal. This is the best view of the water of all the suites!

In Suite 203, decorated in rose and green, we found a floral sleeper sofa and rose wing-back chair, fireplace (the other side of which faces the bedroom), TV, kitchen and more. The bedroom has a tall, curved wood bed frame, rose whirlpool, and rose trim paper along the ceiling line. A large bathroom, and a balcony again with wonderful views, make this great. The loft has a sofa done in light green, pink and blue florals. It's a very bright and airy loft, with another spectacular view. A coffee table, floor lamp and private deck wrap up a great offering!

Suite 204 offered similar décor: a coordinated couch complements the 2 wing back chairs that flank the fireplace. Full kitchen, another 4-poster oak bed, whirlpool, and a doorway to the great balcony which has two rockers waiting for your evening relaxation, complete the first floor. Up the circular stairway, you'll find a small "lookout"room!
