Places to Stay : Sturgeon Bay

Pembrooke Inn
410 N. 4th
Sturgeon Bay

When you walk into the foyer of The Pembrooke Inn, you are overwhelmed with the beauty of the hand-cut hemlock woodwork panels (each about a foot square), from floor to ceiling, and detailed carved woodwork of the banister leading upstairs — all original.

To the right is a sitting room, which is a library full of books and rich colored wallpapers! Gorgeous 5 panel doors (very unusual) grace the entire home.

Another sitting room is just past the foyer, with fireplace, couches and other period furnishings, which add to the original ambiance of Pembrooke.

This beautiful home was built in 1886 by a local shipbuilder, and was called the "Wolter House." The woodwork throughout the house is original, as is the hard rock maple flooring and beveled leaded glass windows. A private residence from 1886 through the 1920’s, the house was transformed into several other purposes, including a boarding house in the 1940’s. Wanda & Andy Schulz purchased the Inn in 2007, and its name hails from Pembrooke, Wales.

A little further along is the dining room, which was the original shipyard office, now graced with a period dining table, green and beige draperies, and a large sideboard from Germany.

Offering 8 gracious rooms, the Pembrooke Inn boasts private baths, with locally made bath amenities, in all rooms, fireplaces in all but the Stratford (a two-room suite) and the Carrisbrooke, and whirlpool/Jacuzzis in all but the Scots. On the main floor is their “signature” room, the Pembrooke, with canopied bed, a fireplace, settee, and walls covered with a muted beige-tone striped paper. The ceiling is divided into squares, echoing the hemlock woodwork panels in the foyer. This is a nice room for wheelchair access.

On the second floor, we found the Kensington Room (the Honeymoon suite), with canopy bed and antique metal bed frame with birds and grapes at the headboard, a fireplace and a couple of sitting chairs. Cozy! There’s also a balcony with wicker furniture and a 2-person hammock!

Then we moved into the Dover Room, which is very country looking with blue and yellow quilts, floral draperies, gingham blue covered wooden rocker, blue and white striped wallpaper below the chair rail, and a reproduction armoire and ceiling fan. Charming room! The Essex Room, also on the second floor, was occupied at the time so we did not tour it.

Up the back stairway, you will find The Scots Room, and the Welsh Room. The Welsh Room has a private balcony, green floral beddings, 2 green and rose wing back chairs, floral wallpaper below the chair rail and elegant rose-colored walls above, and a Jacuzzi. Very nice. The Scots Room, the only room without a Jacuzzi, boats small print blue and green floral paper, and blue and green linens, a love seat and private bath of course.

This is an inn that will fill your senses with beauty, and rich woods. The folks running the inn seemed to be the perfect match — with unbridled enthusiasm for their inn, and their guests. And speaking of guests, here are some guest comments we gleaned from one of their guest books:

"One of the most romantic, cozy rooms we have ever seen!"

"Thanks so much for your grand hospitality in this beautifully restored home."

"What a perfect fit! This made our wedding day complete!"

Guests like the quietness of the inn, its 15-minute walk to the beach, and easy walk to downtown Sturgeon Bay and its restaurants and shops
