The Inn at Little Sister Hill in Sister Bay is a nice little place
for families to stay and a convenient location for couples to enjoy
the Door Peninsula.
There are 13 one-bedroom and 10 two-bedroom suites available here.
Each has a private entryway, a fully equipped kitchen, dining space
and a separate living area. The sofas in the living areas fold out
for sleeping, so even the one bedroom suite can accommodate a family
with small children.
Each suite has just one bathroom, so you’ll have to coordinate
getting ready in the mornings.
The Inn is located at 2715 Little Sister Hill Rd. You’ll travel
north on Hwy. 42 through Ephraim before coming down a hill and seeing
this, well, little road. Turn left and prepare to make a quick right
after traveling just 50 feet or so. The Inn actually sits quite close
to Hwy. 42, nestled on a hill in a woodsy area. Nearby is Bay Ridge
Golf Course, a nine-hole course.
Three separate cedar buildings, each with two levels, stretch along
this property, which was constructed in the early 1980s. They are connected
by a paved pathway running through a wildflower garden.
Director of Operations Julie Newhouse recently took DoorCountyNavigator.com
reviewer and freelance writer Donna Marie Pocius on a tour of the Inn’s
suites and grounds.
The guest registration area is located in the building closest to
Little Sister Hill Rd. and is your first stop for check-in. With pine
ceilings and a stone fireplace, the cozy lobby also serves as a nice
place to play a board game or to enjoy Door County coffee (the breakfast
blend variety is available to guests free each morning, so don’t
miss it).
Check out the bulletin board near the stairway outside the lobby for
upcoming Door County events—the staff does a nice job of keeping
the information current and focused on arts and natural attractions.
You can also choose to rent a video from the library of more than 40
titles—there are TV/VCRs in all suites.
The Rooms
Next, head to your suite. Whether you chose a one-bedroom or two-bedroom
suite, you’ll have plenty of space for your time away from home.
Each bedroom has wardrobers, instead of closets, on the sides of the
bed.
The kitchen includes a stove, refrigerator, microwave, toaster and
even a teapot.
And the bath has blow dryer, hand soap and fresh towels. Light housekeeping
is provided each day.
Each suite is uniquely decorated—some with Door County cherry
or apple harvest themes, others in country décor and one has
photos of waterfalls all around. The end units have an additional window
in the dining area and are offered at the same rate as comparable inside
units.
A highlight is the private patio or deck—you can sit out there
and not see your neighbors—just take in a woodsy view.
But when you want to take time to get to know other people, head out
to the pool. Depth of the water ranges from three feet to five feet,
and there are deck chairs all around for people who prefer the sun
over the water.
There also is a separate outdoor deck, outfitted with two gas grills
and a picnic table. “A lot of guests send dad out to grill and
bring the food back to the room,” Newhouse says.
A nearby play area with swings offers a place for kids to frolic.
Some of the convenient attractions are golfing nine holes at nearby
Bay Ridge, driving north about one mile to Sister Bay’s business
area for shopping, heading over to Pebble Beach for swimming or biking
on nearby trails in Peninsula State Park.
The Inn at Little Sister Hill is open from around April 28 through
Nov. 1, and some of the off-season rates are very reasonable
for a Sister Bay location and size of space -about 600 square feet.
Keep in mind, though, that this Inn is a tad close to Hwy. 42, so
when you are out and about on the grounds, you might hear some traffic
and see the cars buzzing by through the trees. However, we were not
aware of traffic noise while we were inside the complex during the
tour (or frankly any noise—the rooms appear well insulated).
The staff is committed to guest service and is rather meticulous -
Newhouse adjusted a slightly crooked valance in a suite’s living
area and picked up a small piece of plastic on the parking lot during
our tour. We love seeing things like that!
The
Inn at Little Sister Hill is a nice choice for a stay in Door County
- especially for couples who want to get away with the kids or
even seniors who want to stay near a nine-hole course and might
like to eat in the privacy of their own room.
