Water view, cottage style deluxe accommodations, private shoreline, docking pier and fish boils! All this and a fantastic location to boot! The Edgewater Resort is located in the village of Ephraim and is between the villages of Fish Creek (to the south) and Sister Bay (to the north). It consists of three historic buildings, one of which houses the Old Post Office Restaurant, all situated on the water with most rooms offering a view of Eagle Harbor. There are seven different floor plans, 25 suites in all, each with a covered veranda or patio. Amenities exclusive to Edgewater guest include outdoor heated pool, eight person outdoor hot tub, barbecues, sauna, private shoreline and a private docking pier. You can even launch your boat just two blocks away at Ephraim’s municipal dock. And Ephraim is a hot spot for outdoor activities and fun including boat rentals of many types, water skiing and parasailing, paddle boating and more. And with all of the units refurbished in 2005 (with new furniture, new bedding, new mattresses etc.), this place keeps getting better and better!  We like it!

The Private Shoreline

Though not a beach, we make special note of the shoreline because it is awesome. The Edgewater maintains over 400 feet of private shoreline for its guests. It is very much a park-like setting with stone fences, benches and a truly spectacular view of Eagle Harbor. Jutting out from the landscape across the harbor is Peninsula State Park. You can drive there in just a few minutes (head south to the main entrance located on north end of Fish Creek).

The Original Hotel

As mentioned, the Edgewater Resort is made up of three historic buildings, with 26 spacious suites. We toured room 106 located on the second story of the original lodge, built in the late 1890’s. Of course, this building as well as the others, have been recently renovated in a manor reminiscent of an early 1900 classic waterfront resort. This building is also where you will find the office, and it features the original fieldstone fireplace of the lodge whose hearth has the word “Edgewater” written in stone - pretty cool! Located just outside the office is a nice outdoor patio with a bench and swing.

The Rooms

We toured several rooms and the first thing we noticed upon entering room # 106, is a very bright, fresh and airy atmosphere. The view of the water from the second story is outstanding. Entering, a full kitchen is to your left and offers lots of cabinet space both above and below the countertop areas. Opposite this area is a large counter top breakfast bar that has a double stainless steel sink and a built in dishwasher, with four chairs and plenty of space to enjoy breakfast or a quick snack. To the right are two storage closets, while ahead is the living room. It has a chest/trunk that serves as a coffee table, light green and blue furniture (queen sleeper sofa & chair); end tables, a whicker chair and a gas fireplace with TV and VCR built in over the mantel. Lots of windows provide plenty of sunlight, while a door leads another retreat - a very large, covered veranda. Not only is the veranda a great place to enjoy the water view, it is also a perfect place to watch the activities of the people passing by and of course, catch a glorious Door County sunset.

The master bedroom is fully carpeted and features a hot tub in the corner, TV, a king size bed, a large bay window, and a full bathroom with standing shower. There is also a door leading to the veranda from the bedroom nice touch.

We also toured room #112 in the “middle building” and #122 in the “post office” building. The post office building was originally built in 1874 and was a general store until it was used as Ephraim’s post office in the early 1900’s. Now it is doing double-duty: up on the second story are four fabulous suites (including room #122). Below, on the first floor, there is a great restaurant!

THE OLD POST OFFICE RESTAURANT

You enter this restaurant by stepping on to a large covered porch. Comprised of two rooms, it features hardwood floors, wainscoted walls, a fireplace and cloth covered tables with wicker caned dining chairs. Talk about a great place to start the day! Waterfront dining in a bright cherry atmosphere. The restaurant serves breakfast and nightly fish boils only. Breakfast menu includes omelets, pancakes (buttermilk, cherry or blueberry), Belgian waffles and French toast. In addition, a great variety of lighter entrees include fruits, juice, yogurt, toast and muffins. The fish boil, prepared with traditional Door County flair over a roaring open fire complete with boil over, consists of steaks of fresh whitefish, small red potatoes, white onions, homemade lemon, pumpkin and rye breads, and fresh baked Door County Cherry Pie.

The restaurant is open from May thru October. Breakfast is served daily. Fish boils served Monday thru Saturday evenings and Sundays on holiday weekends. Outdoor seating is available. Groups welcome. Non-smoking. Chicken and ribs are available as an alternative to fish, and hotdogs provided for the children. Always check with them for the latest details! Read our Old Post Office review!

All the buildings will take you back in time with their covered verandas, rocking chairs and wide wooden deck-ways. The deluxe suites we viewed all had queen sleeper sofas in the living rooms, whirlpool baths, fireplaces, clear maple hardwood floors (except in bedrooms) and full kitchens. The suites are clean and very well maintained. The grounds are gorgeous, including large courtyard with the outdoor pool in the center. All buildings are connected with brick walkways including the fish boil area. A conference room is available for groups up to 25. Children under five stay free and cribs are complimentary. The Edgewater Resort is a smoke free environment and is open year round. Check them out at www.edge-waterresort.com for special packages.
