Places to Stay : Egg Harbor

The Wakefield House in Door CountyThe Wakefield House
7717 West Shore Drive
Egg Harbor
920 493 8845

Secluded in the woods and on the water in an exclusive part of Egg Harbor, the Wakefield House is a great find.  Its bright yellow color will grab your attention as you approach the home, and pear through the tree-lined driveway.

Enter the front door and you walk into a small foyer, and ahead is the combination dining room and living room.  The large picture window straight ahead looks out onto the waves lapping the shoreline of Egg Harbor.  You might even spy seagulls sunning on the rock!

Flanking the picture window are two upholstered chairs, with a table between them – a nice grouping for a casual conversation, or to read a book.  Throw-pillows, with a bird theme, grace the chairs.  The main living room area has a yellow floral couch (with birds and butterflies) facing the fireplace, along with three occasional chairs, a wooden coffee table and a butler’s table making a comfy grouping.  There’s a TV console along with a VCR.DVD player, and satellite TV.  Aside the fireplace, to the left, are bookshelves with atlases, encyclopedias and a variety of novels.  To the right are cabinets housing a variety of games.

The dining area is graced with a large mahogany table that seats six, with coordinating upholstered chairs (very nice), a writing desk, buffet and china cabinet.  The entire area, living room and dining room, has lush taupe carpeting.

Off to the left of the dining room area is a large, fully equipped kitchen, complete with a wooden table and four chairs. Dark wood cabinets are plentiful, and house some pots and pans and other related kitchen items.  There’s a range with upper and lower ovens, full refrigerator, double stainless steel sink, and a menu-planning desk.  The floor is coordinating vinyl flooring, and the walls are covered with a floral wallpaper, also with birds and butterflies, coordinating with the visible couch in the other room.

The kitchen overlooks the sun porch through the window by the table, and there is a farm door that exits the kitchen and enters the sun porch.  So off we went through the doorway and onto the sun porch.

Out on the sun porch, there’s a large round glass table and chairs, a chaise lounge, and a couple of other chairs, and a corner-standing antique TV.  The view from here is magnificent – a small lawn, then rocks and sparking waters, seagulls and sun.  Simply beautiful.

A set of sliding glass doors (a little rickety at the time of the review), open out onto the lawn and waterfront – you can hear the waves soothingly washing the shore, and the breeze is brisk.

If you are into water views, this is one terrific home to rent.  The view is spectacular, and you can look up the coast and see water, trees, and sun.  Very nice!

BEDROOMS

On the opposite side of the house you’ll find a three-bedroom wing.  As you walk into the hallway, the first bedroom to the right sports blue floral wallpaper with birdcage motif, an antique wooden bed frame (full), a side table with lamp, a large rocking chair with cushion, and a small cane-seat rocker.  An antique dressing table and small armoire (all antiques) finish this tastefully done room.  A small private powder room serves this bedroom, done up in some type of turquoise color fixtures (no tub).

Further down the hall and to the right is the second bedroom, with two twin beds, yellow floral wall paper with coordinating faux-finish dresser and table, two cane-seated chairs and nightstand.  A large closet provides ample storage, and from the bay window, you can see the water off to the left.

Exit this bedroom and straight down the hall is bedroom number 3, with a full bath in between.  The bathroom, servicing both bedrooms number 2 and 3, in general, is the only bath with a tub.  Two doors service this bathroom, one on the end near bedroom number 2, and one on the other end serving bedroom number 3.  There is a tub (no stand-up shower) with a shower hose, Formica-covered sink area, s large mirror, lots of light, and floral wallpaper.

Bedroom three: this is a large room that has two windows on either side of the bed facing the water.  A full bed, with white, metal headboard, chest of drawers, rocking chairs, nightstands with lamps flanking the bed, and lots of storage space complete the room.  There is a small TV atop the storage closet shelf, and a door that leads out to the side yard.

Other than some wallpaper seams needing some attention, and the sliding door off the sun porch needing some minor fixing up, this is a wonderful home to rent.  The Wakefield House grounds are nice, the home is all on one floor, the view is spectacular, the ambiance, peaceful, the setting tranquil.  It is a true retreat, yet a few minutes drive to downtown Egg Harbor.    Homes right on the water, available for rent, are scarce so Wakefield House is a genuine find.  So when you reserve the Wakefield House, please tell them that DoorCountyNavigator.com sent you!
