The Feathered Star bed & breakfast is located just six miles South of Egg Harbor. Built in early 2000, it is designed to accommodate everyone including those with disabilities. The Feathered Star has six rooms, all beautifully done. We met with Sandra Chlubna, the innkeeper, who led us through her wonderful place.

Each room has its own character, showcasing various "quilting" techniques by the owner and other artists. In fact, "feathering"is a technique where quilters put zigzag edges along the star pattern to show off their expertise and has been used for generations. Other quilting techniques include Country Squire, Catnip, and Garden Trellis.

Before entering, we took notice of the wrap around covered porch that is attached around two sides of the house, very nice and functional too. The house is surrounded by grassy meadows, adjacent farmland, country stone fences lined with trees, a garden and fruit trees that include cherry, apple, plum and pear.

Once inside, you enter a hallway whose walls are a combination of plaster and wallpaper with a stenciled flower border. It is carpeted and features a large baker's rack that displays a plate collection and handmade "whimsy"balls. Whimsy balls, you ask? Just in case you don't know, a "whimsy"ball is a toy from the past made by quilters from old material. They can be different sizes and patterns. One of our reviewers purchased a small one for his daughter Sophie, and she loves it! And the whimsy ball is even wash machine and dryer safe!

At the end of the hall you enter the "gathering room"which has a large quilt hanging on the wall as its focal point. It has a large sunburst pattern with old ties that are quilted in to make the sunrays - very cool! This room is very cozy and warm. It has lots of comfortable furniture placed around a gas-burning fireplace. The mantel is oak with a built in mirror. It is decorated with miniature lighthouses, some replicas of the area. To the left of the fireplace is built in library cabinet with collections of books from the Civil War, WWII, Americas most exciting years and National Geographic. This room is perfect for hanging out, relaxing and chatting; it also has a stereo and compact disc player.

To the left of the living room is a hallway that leads to a screened in porch with great views of the countryside. There is a set of old stained glass kitchen cupboard doors uniquely crafted into the wall that separates these two rooms.

The dining room is off the living room and features a large family table and eight chairs, a china hutch and wall buffet that were once Sandra's great grandparents. The wall buffet has a pitcher and glasses and candy jars filled with trail mix, checks mix and chocolate chip cookies for the guests. The cookies are awesome and BIG! There is also an antique table utilized as a coffee station and another set up for serving breakfast.

Breakfast is continental plus, served buffet style, including fresh fruit in season, ho-made muffins, cereal, coffee and tea. Of course you can enjoy your meal at the family table or use the trays provided to carry your breakfast to the porch or nearby picnic table. Coffee and tea are ready at 7.00 am with the remainder to follow.

As we mentioned, we toured all the rooms and they are all very clean, have lots of room and let in plenty of natural sunlight. They all have private baths; air conditioning, fireplaces and all are ADA handicapped accessible as well as wheelchair accessible.

Room #2

This room has two single beds (nice when friends are traveling together) with beautiful quilted bedspreads of gold, green, yellow and deep red material. There is a matching chest of drawers that matches the beds, all of which were purchased in Detroit and originally made by the Kling Company of New York in the 1950's. There is a nightstand between the beds and two Queen Ann style chairs. The woodwork around the windows incorporates "rosettes"and is painted. The walls are very tastefully finished with vertical pattern wallpaper on the bottom with a stenciled border just above it, and painted walls on top -painted with a technique called "ragging". This is where a base coat (Colorado sand, in this case) is applied first, then a second coat (colonial cream, here) is applied by first dipping and old rag into the paint and then "rolling"it across the wall creating a really nice pattern. There's plenty of sunlight coming through three nice sized windows as well as the window in the door leading to a shared covered deck. The fireplace has an oak mantel and there are built-in cabinets to the left incorporating a desk, refrigerator, compact disc player, TV and VCR. The bathroom is roomy and clean, as you would expect. It is tastefully decorated and very functional.

Room #3

This room features a queen size sleigh bed with and awesome "cat" quilt that was quilted by a friend of Sandra's. The lower part of the walls in this room are wainscoting, painted "misty mauve". The top part of the wall is painted "old amensyth". These colors compliment one another very well. The fireplace has a wonderful butternut mantel with a tile hearth. Other furnishings include a blue upholstered "drum"chair from the 60's and a nice chest of drawers for storage. It has the same amenities as room #2. The bathroom has a roll-in shower (no lip in the bottom of shower to inhibit wheelchair access). Oh, there are subtle hints of kittens and cats throughout the room, tastefully implemented - pictures etc. You won't notice until you were in the room for awhile!

The Feathered Star also has a four-person hot tub for its guests to use. Amenities for the disabled include: roll-in showers (two suites), handicap rails, fold down seats in the showers, raised toilets, wide doorways and hallways and sinks and beds that are "lift"friendly. These suites are beautiful and appropriate for all including children. Pets are welcome and three and half acres are available for them to run. The entire building is non-smoking. The Feathered Star is located on a four mile stretch that includes a winery (daily tours), coffee shops, antique barns, old schoolhouse (antiques), dairy farm (daily tours) and a great little restaurant called Laurie's Country Calf-A. Within walking distance from your suite, it is a favorite of locals, and very well received for breakfast and all-you-can eat fish specials on Fridays. In addition, The Feathered Star is located right off the door county snowmobile trail, making it a great winter destination too.

The Feathered Star is a welcomed addition to the fine B&Bs in Door County. Stop in to see for yourself, and visit their website as well for additional information, rates and availability.
