23rd ANNUAL POLAR BEAR SWIM - JACKSONPORT

Noon sharp – don’t be late! Lakeside Park Beach in Jacksonport on Hwy 57. Take a dip in the icy waters if you dare! This event is free to participants and visitors. NEW YEAR'S DAY PARADE - EGG HARBOR
Date of event: 1/01/09
Annual New Year’s Day Parade usually starts at the south end of Egg Harbor at 1 PM - downtown. Anyone can participate – this is a fun and unusual parade! Regardless the weather, the parade marches on!

FAMILY CENTERS MOVIE NIGHT: THE ROOKIE - BRUSSELS
Date of event: 1/02/09
At the Southern Door School Auditorium, 2073 County Trunk DK from 6-8 PM. Registration at the door beginning at 5:30 PM. All ages are welcome. Children 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Admission is free, donations accepted. The movie, starring Dennis Quaid tells the real life story of Jim Morris’ incredible return to major league baseball as the oldest major league pitcher in nearly 30 years. DOOR COUNTY WINTER WONDERLAND TOUR
Dates of event: January 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th, 31st

Pickup is county-wide between 9:15 and 10:00 AM. Trolley guests will tour/taste at an award winning winery, followed by a cozy sleigh ride through the Door’s most wintry landscapes. Top it off with a fireside lunch at the romantic White Gull Inn. Call 920-868-1100 for reservations. $54 per person (plus tax). Includes trolley transportation, fireside lunch, and sleigh ride. FAIRFIELD WINTER ART EXHIBIT
STACIA DICK-SCHUSTER: SYMBIOSIS – STURGEON BAY

At Fairfield Center for Contemporary Art.
Stacia Dick-Schuster, a Door County based artist will host an opening reception for her new exhibition in the lower-level 242 Gallery at 6:30 PM, January 9th. Guests may enjoy refreshments as they visit with the artist and view her work. Symbiosis comprises a series of pieces that reflect the discordant relationship between nature and society. The collection of acrylics and mixed media is a visual journal of that relationship. For info, call 920-746-0001.

DOOR COUNTY TROLLEY PROGRESSIVE DINNER OUTING

Pick up at 5 PM at Orchard Country Winery
Trolley guests will experience unique stops for hors d’oeuvres/cocktails at a surprise location, an elegant dinner at The Inn at Kristofer’s, and a decadent dessert at a romantic inn. THE BIG READ 2009: THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER

Peninsula Players and Door County Library present a month-long series of events to begin January 12th as The Big Read Door County 2009 celebrates and explores Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Special events will start with a kickoff celebration at Door Community Auditorium in Fish Creek on Jan. 12 at 6:30 PM with appearances by author Norb Blei, Twain impersonator Parker Drew and members of Door County’s own Sawyer family.

EXHIBIT -THE BIG READ: A TOM SAWYER EXPERIENCE- STURGEON BAY
At Fairfield Center for Contemporary Art, 242 Michigan St.
Dates of event: 1/22/2009 To 3/14/2009
The Big Read returns to Door County for a second year, this time featuring Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. This exhibit, displayed in four sections, reflects the 1876 classic’s continuing resonance with the public and its ongoing impact on contemporary art, from the earliest years of the 20th century to present day. It will open with a 6:30 PM reception on January 22nd with wine and hors d’oeuvres. Call 920-746-0001.

5th ANNUAL PAMPERING AND PRACTICALITIES AN EVENING FOR WOMEN – STURGEON BAY

This popular annual event is at the Stone Harbor Resort from 5:00 PM-9:30 PM. Women of all ages will experience pampering activities at exhibitor booths offering paraffin hand treatments, chair massage, skin care, makeup and other practical advice on health, medical and community resources. Motivational speaker Chris Clarke-Epstein, CSP will entertain. Hors d’oeuvres, desserts, cash bar, silent auction, raffle and door prizes. $35 before 12/31/08, $45 1/1/09 - 1/21/09.

TOM SAWYER CHILDREN’S DAY – STURGEON BAY

In conjunction with the NEA’s The Big Read, the Fairfield will host a special Tom Sawyer Children’s Day from 10 AM until 2 PM. Children can wear Tom Sawyer or Becky Thatcher costumes and try their hand at painting the white picket fence. Refreshments will be served and parents are encouraged to bring cameras.
