Next time you head to Door County, travel a tad further north of where you usually land. Drive to the tip of the Peninsula--aka Door County North. Here, the communities of Ellison Bay, Gills Rock, Rowleys Bay, Northport and northern Sister Bay have a lot to offer.
In fact, last year some of the businesses and residents located in those areas came together under the name Door County North in an effort to communicate what makes the area unique and all there is to do and see.
Make one of many fine hotels or inns your base for traveling around Door County North. Terra Cottages, Gills Rock, offers cozy vintage two-bedroom cottages. They are nestled on a property with partial Lake Michigan views. The cottages have full kitchens and gas fireplaces, and each accommodates up to six people. Enjoy the environmentally conscious approach of the owner as well as a short walk to the village of Gills Rock.
For example, head out for dinner at the Shoreline Restaurant, 12747 Hwy, 42. Another idea is to sign up for a cooking class at the Savory Spoon Cooking School, 12042 Hwy. 42, Ellison Bay. Enjoy a hands-on cooking class led by an experienced chef. Then, enjoy dining with your fellow classmates on your culinary creations. The school is housed in a repurposed historic schoolhouse.
Ellison Bay is also a great place to shop. Don’t miss Newport House Gallery, 12044 Hwy. 42, offering the works of nationally recognized folk artists. Nearby is Linden Gallery, Hwy. 42 at Mink River Road, where the owners show their hand-selected antiques as well as works of art of master artists from Asia.
Cousin’s Walk, 11940 Lakeview Rd., is a delightful gallery, where the resident artist presents painted furniture, wearable art and more.
Door County North also affords travelers abundant activities. The newest area park is Grand View Town Park. Enjoy breathtaking view of Ellison Bay off Hwy. 42. Newport State Park, 475 S. Newport Lane, off Cty. NP, has hiking, biking and cross-country ski trails.
Other activities include Shoreline Scenic Cruises’ narrated tours to lighthouses, cliffs and islands. Door County Maritime Museum has a satellite location in Gills Rock. And a destination point in Door County North is the Clearing, an adult folk school established by renowned landscape architect Jens Jensen. If presents year-round classes in arts, humanities and natural sciences.
A good time to come to Door County North is around the time of a festival or event such as the Ellison Bay Arts spring art crawl May 18-19, Olde Ellison Bay Days June 28-29 and the Ellison Bay Arts fall art crawl Oct. 26-27.
